Quilts And Comforter Presentations11/20/2014American Legion Family gathered at American Legion Post 136, Mulvane, Kansas to honor, and to take part in a special presentation for, 3 of our Veterans battling cancer. Pat Brown and Pat Culver presented quilts, on behalf of the War and Peace Quilters, to U. S. Air Force Veteran Charlie Trapp and U. S. Air Force Veteran Rick Johnson. A comforter was also presented to U. S. Navy Veteran Terry Knight. These 3 Veterans proudly served and sacrificed for our Country. They continue to fight, but, it’s a different war…the war on cancer. We know these Veterans will continue to fight with courage and with the support of their American Legion Family. Please keep Charlie, Rick, Terry and their families in your continued thoughts and prayers. God Bless them all!!
“Celebration of Life” Service-WWII Veteran Philip W. Blake11/15/2014Riders stood Flag Line for the Memorial Service in honor of U.S. Army, WWII Veteran Philip W. Blake. The Memorial Service (Celebration of Life) took place at West Evangelical Free Church. Phil Blake was the "caretaker" of Veterans Park and is responsible for bringing attention to all Veterans Memorials and keeping them in wonderful condition. Funeral-Richard (U.S. Navy Vet) & Marilee (Field Nurse) Emerson11/14/2014Riders provided a flag line for the funeral services of U.S. Navy Veteran Richard and his wife Marilee Emerson. Richard was a United States Navy Veteran during the Korean War and Marilee was a volunteer field nurse during the war effort. Richard was also an American Legion Post 10 Member. He was very fond of the American Legion Riders for the services they provide for All Veterans. Walk Of Freedom Memorial Ceremony11/11/2014American Legion and VFW members were invited to participate in the Derby Veteran’s Day, Walk Of Freedom, Ceremony. The ceremony was originally scheduled to take place at the Walk of Freedom Memorial Park at Garrett Park, Derby Kansas. Due to cold and windy weather, the Ceremony was held indoors at Woodlawn United Methodist Church, Derby, Kansas. Veterans Day Program-Andover Central Middle School11/11/2014Riders were invited to attend a Veterans’ Day Program, put on by students and faculty, at Andover Central Middle in Andover, Ks. S.A.L., Squadron 408, Breakfast11/9/2014The Sons of the American Legion (S.A.L.), Squadron 408, Derby-Haysville, Kansas hosted their monthly All-U-Can-Eat Breakfast on Sunday, November 9, 2014. In honor of Veterans and upcoming Veterans’ Day, all Veterans were served a free, complimentary, breakfast courtesy of the S.A.L. To all Veterans…THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND SACRIFICES!!

AL 408 Family-Hillcrest Cemetery Project-Phase 211/3/2014This album contains pictures of the process of Phase 2 of the Hillcrest Cemetery Project. 24 American Flags will be placed at the entrance of Hillcrest Cemetery on Veterans Day. American Flags, Service & Legion Entity Flags will be displayed on Memorial Day. Updates of Phase 2 will be posted here until Phase 2 is complete. Photos are dated to indicate when work was done. The Hillcrest Cemetery Project is being done through the combined efforts of the American Legion Family of Post 408, Derby-Haysville, Kansas.

Funeral-U.S. Army Veteran “Lil” John Moyer10/31/2014Riders stood Flag Line for the funeral of American Legion Post 256 and VFW Post 3115 member John Moyer AKA Lil John. John went to be with the Lord 10-27-2014 after he was in a Motorcycle accident. Funeral service was held at Broadway Mortuary, Wichita, Kansas. Interment was at Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, Winfield, Kansas. Please keep the Family and Friends of John in your thoughts and prayers. John will be missed by many. Helen (West) Andrews-Presentation To The Post10/26/2014Special guests Helen (West) Andrews & family attended the Ladies Auxiliary Breakfast to present a display of Medals to the American Legion Post 408 Family. The Medals were awarded to John M. West during his time of service to our country. John is Helen's son & American Legion Post 408 is named in honor of John. We are the John M. West American Legion Post 408, Derby-Haysville, KS. Ron & Shirley Ray were also in attendance. Ron served with John in Vietnam. It was an honor & pleasure to see & visit with the West & Ray Families!!
5th District Homecoming10/25/20145th District Homecoming took place at Wayne G. Austin American Legion Post 2 in Newton, KS for 5th District Officers?American Legion Ladies Auxiliary President, Deb Unruh, American Legion Commander, Harold Scheaffer and Sons of the American Legion Commander, Mike Saindon. It was a great evening with great food, fun, entertainment and fellowship. Best wishes to our 5th District Officers for a wonderful year!

Escort & Send Off-John W. Monk10/24/2014Riders escorted Retired Master Sergeant John W. Monk (98) to the turnpike to begin his journey, by motor home, to his boyhood home in Haynesville, Louisiana. He is from a family of 12 children…he, his brother & a sister are the only living siblings & range in age from 90 to 98. Mr. Monk served in World War II & the Korean War as a Drill Sergeant training soldiers for Vietnam. He retired from active duty in June of 1962. Safe journey and best wishes go out to Mr. Monk. Military Appreciation Night-Campus High School10/17/2014Riders attended the Military Appreciation Night at Campus High School in Haysville, Kansas. The riders circled the track then formed a tunnel for the Campus Colts to walk through. Dallas Love, SVC Kansas VFW was the honored Guest. Dwight D. Eisenhower Pilgrimage-Abilene, Kansas10/11/2014American Legion Family from Kansas and surrounding states attended the Dwight D. Eisenhower Pilgrimage at the Eisenhower Museum and Library in Abilene, Kansas. The purpose of the event is to memorialize and pay tribute to President Eisenhower and his accomplishments…the only U.S. President who claimed Kansas as his home state.

County Fair-VA Hospital-Wichita, KS10/2/2014The County Fair at the VA Hospital, hosted by the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, took place Thursday, October 2, 2014. American Legion Family and activity duty personnel were on hand to assist the Veteran residents of the VA so they could have a fun day at the Fair.
Historian Award-Grace Adkins10/2/2014Grace Adkins, Past Historian for American Legion Post 408, was presented the Floyd J. Rogers Post History Award for submitting the most outstanding Post History. The award was initially presented to American Legion Post 408 during the 96th Annual Convention of The American Legion Kansas Department, May 18, 2014 in Hutchinson, KS. Funeral, Escort & Flag Line-WWII Veteran Tony Rico9/22/2014ALR Chapters & American Legion members attended funeral services for American Legion Post 136 life member Tony Rico, age 92. Tony served in WWII with the US Army Air Corps in New Guinea for 3 years as an MP. Funeral service, with flag line, was held at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Mulvane, KS. Funeral-U.S. Navy Veteran Daryl Coffman9/6/2014ALR and VFW members stood a flag line for the funeral & to pay final respects for U.S. Navy Veteran Daryl Coffman. Daryl served during WWII as a gunner on the USS Idaho. Daryl enlisted in the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor to defend our beloved country. Mr. Horstman retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1968 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He had a distinguished & decorated career as a pilot. He piloted a B-47 Bomber during the Korean War & received a Distinguished Flying Cross. AL 408 Flag Etiquette Team Presentation8/23/2014The Derby-Haysville American Legion 408 Flag Etiquette Team held a Flag Etiquette education session at the Post on Saturday, August 23, 2014. The Flag Team visits (by invitation) schools, senior centers, organizations and any other group that would like to host a Flag Etiquette Session. The purpose and mission of the Flag Etiquette Team is to educate youth and adults on the proper use, display, folding, handling and retiring of The American Flag. VERY EDUCATIONAL!

Services were held at NewSpring Church, Wichita, Ks. Shawn & Danielle, U.S. Army Veterans, met & later became engaged while serving in Iraq. They were married following their Iraq Tour. They leave behind 2 young children. God Bless the families, friends & comrades?our prayers are with all of them!!

On behalf of Governor Sam Brownback, fellow Vietnam Veterans & Veterans statewide, past Commander of Post 408 Legion, Mike Shock, presented Debbie with a long over-due Vietnam Veterans Medal, Medallion & Certificate for her honorable service to help maintain the security of our Nation during the Vietnam War. In honor of Hughie's 100th birthday last year, Hughie was given a leather vest with patches on it. Bling volunteered to sew all the patches on at no charge! Hughie loves his vest! Mr. Stimson, 91, passed away March 4, 2013. Celebration of Bob’s Life was held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, March 11, 2013, at RiverWalk Church of Christ, 225 N. Waco. Bob proudly served in World War II, Army, Air Corps, South Pacific. After being discharged from the service, he was hired at Beech aircraft, where he worked until his retirement 43 years later. Bob was an avid golfer, and loved the sport. He took pride in gardening and loved fishing. A memorial has been established with Carpenter’s Place Children’s Home, 1501 N. Meridian, Wichita, KS 67203. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Stimson Family.

Pictures-Bikes For Tots12/4/2010The American Legion Riders participated in the "Bikes For Tots" Parade & assisted in the unloading of bicycles at the Salvation Army warehouse. Pictures include banner listing "Bikes For Tots" Sponsors. "Bikes For Tots" is an organization that collects new bikes to give to the Salvation Army & local Police who then give these bikes to kids in need at Christmas time. The Trees were donated by 9 Kansas Area Tree Growers. All shipping/freight costs is donated by FedEx. These trees will head to Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota to add “Christmas Cheer” for our Defenders Of Freedom & Their Families. 29 States and over 700 Tree Growers & Donors participate in the Trees For Troops Program. These trees are delivered to 54 Bases in the U.S. and Bases overseas. Thank You & Merry Christmas To Our Military & Their Families!!!

Pictures-Patriot Guard Mission-Funeral-SPC Thomas Moffitt (KIA)10/30/2010The Patriot Guard attended Funeral Service for U.S. Army SPC Thomas Moffitt on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Central Community Church, Wichita, KS. SPC Moffitt, 21, died October 24 in Paktika Province, Afghanistan from injuries sustained from small arms & rocket-propelled grenade fire. He was assigned to the D Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His unit is known as the "Screaming Eagles." He served as a gunner on a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle. SPC Moffitt enlisted in the Army after graduating high school. He served a tour of duty in South Korea prior deployment to Afghanistan. SPC Moffitt was a courageous soldier whose sacrifice will never be forgotten. The Patriot Guard extends our sincere condolences to SPC Moffitt's Family, Friends, and Fellow Soldiers.

Nicholas served two tours in Vietnan, was awarded numerous medals & citations, including the Bronze star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, several Air Medals & the coveted Combat Infantryman Badge. Merle passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010 at age 67. Mr. Esslinger was a 20-year Air Force veteran...he served a tour in Vietnam & two tours in the Philippines. He was stationed at Duluth, Minnesota; San Antonio, Texas & McConnell AFB, KS. He was a dog handler & security policeman. Merle retired as a Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force in 1984.

The donation was given to help cover the cost of replacing camping equipment that was stolen from their storage unit. The Scout Troop worked hard over a period of a few years to earn the money to purchase this equipment. "Bikes For Tots" Parade12/5/2009The American Legion Riders led as Honor Guard for the “Bikes For Tots” Parade and assisted in the unloading of over 170 bikes at the Salvation Army warehouse. Pictures include a banner listing “Bikes For Tots” Sponsors. “Bikes For Tots” is an organization that collects new bicycles to give to the Salvation Army and local Police who then give these bikes to kids in need at Christmas time.

Packing Completed10/29/2009"Christmas In A Box" is officially on its way to our Deployed Troops. Sorting & packing at Post 256 wrapped up Thurs. evening. The shipping container, loaded with “Christmas In A Box”, left Post 256 Fri. morning. KFDI’s Brian & Kellie is still collecting donations for the Troops & the Wounded Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Riley, KS. Thanks to all who supported the Troop Support Ride & Christmas In A Box project!
Packing Boxes10/27/2009American Legion Riders & Supporters gathered at ALR Post 256 for days 3 & 4 to sort & pack more boxes for Our Troops Deployed during Christmas. Over 350 boxes are ready to be shipped. With the donated items received, thus far, well over half was a result of the generosity of those who gave during the American Legion Riders "Troop Support Ride". Way to go ALR & Supporters! Atwoods donated all hot dogs and buns for this fundraiser along with making a $100 donation. Hot dogs sold for 10 cents each. Over 550 hot dogs were sold. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1940 with last military assignment in Derby, near McConnell AFB where he retired from the Air Force in 1968 as Lieutenant Colonel. Many career awards & recognitions.

Decorated bags were filled with sugar-free cookies, sugar free candy and a banana. After filling the bags, the Legion Riders rode to Westview Manor, Derby, Kansas to visit with and deliver a goodie bag to all the residents. What a great day!!

The Riders walked in honor of Becky Hansen (ALR 408 Member) who suffers from MS. Through donations, Team ALR raised over $4000 to help fight MS. Framing and partial sheeting of the store room was completed by a volunteer crew. Friday 3-20-09: Sheeting on north side added and door was hung...window was delivered. All work done was accomplished by volunteers. It's greatly appreciated...Thank You!

Pictures-Air Conditioner Reinstalled3/18/2009The Post has air conditioning again. The air conditioner had to be moved so the concrete floor for the new smoking area could be poured. Lines had to be extended and rerouted to reach the air conditioner. The air conditioner is up and running thanks to the donated time and work of Larry Powell. Thank You Larry! :-)

The 184th Unit: Homecoming3/1/2009Welcome Home-SMSgt Donna Buckman & Members of Her Unit (184th Services Flight, SVF)-Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. The Team returned from Manas Kyrgyzstan, the main hub for Afghanistan. Duties included lodging, food services, recreation, fitness & mortuary affairs. Marine CPL Sean Smith; Send Off2/14/2009Kansas ALR had a second mission at Scholfield Honda following the presentations to The Kansas Quilts Of Valor Foundation. A spur-of-the-moment Send Off was done for Marine CPL E4 Sean Smith. Martha Smith, one of the quilters of QOV, is Sean's Mom. A Send-Off Flag was produced, signed & presented to CPL Smith. Sean left for North Carolina the 15th. From there, he'll be headed to Iraq. Thank you for your service Sean! God Bless you & your family!!

While in Afghanistan, MSgt Webber was injured when a mortar round hit the truck he was standing by…chunks of Shrapnel hit him causing him to lose a pint of blood a minute. MSgt Webber recently returned home from Walter Reed & will continue to serve at McConnell AFB. God Bless MSgt Webber & Family!

Pictures-Banana Run-Care Homes12/14/2008ALR members Of Post 408 packed 220 "Christmas" goodie bags with a banana, sugar free cookies/candies and a Christmas Card for all Veterans and residents of Westview Manor in Derby, KS and Haysville Healthcare Center in Haysville, Ks. Legion Riders made "in-person-special deliveries" to each resident at both facilties. The chilly day was warmed with smiles, hugs and appreciation...what a great day!!!

"Santa's Helpers"...aka: Legion Riders traveled to ALCH to deliver Christmas presents for the kids. "Santa" fulfilled the kids' requests for what they wanted for Christmas...smiles filled the gym where the kids gathered to receive and open their gifts. The joy of giving...it's a great feeling!! The trees, loaded in a Fedex Tractor Trailer, will head to Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota for delivery in time to help add a touch of Christmas for our Defenders Of Freedom. Chris returned home recently from his deployment in Iraq via Bethesda Hospital after suffering injuries while clearing houses of IED's and other explosive devices. After hearing Chris's story, how he was injured and the injuries he suffered, we're very thankful to have him here to do this "Welcome Home"! God Bless Chris, his family and Jessie!

All toys donated on this run will go to children in the Mulvane Community. A chilly day but the hospitality of the Chief and Staff of the Mulvane Emergency Services offered up a warm serving of chili along with cinnamon rolls, cookies and beverage. Thank you Mulvane!

Veterans Program-Andover Middle School11/11/2008Staging of bikes in Derby and Andover, Kansas. Veterans Day program put on by students and staff at Andover Central Middle School. Students, staff, parents along with active and retired military personnel were outside to greet the riders as they arrived. Flags waved, applause and cheers by all. What a great show of Partiotism and appreciation for our Veterans! The students did a great job! Thank you Andover Middle School!!

Toy Run-Wichita11/2/2008These are pictures taken the day of the Toy Run in Wichita, Kansas. 3310 Bikes gathered at Lawrence Stadium prior to the ride to the Kansas Coliseum to drop off toys for the Marines Toys For Tots. From what we've heard on the news, all the toys donated will be given to children in the Wichita area. A lot of kids are going to have a great Christmas because of the generosity of all these riders. A wonderful day in every way!!

We had a very productive day! Many boxes are packed and ready to go but we still have more "labor of love" to pack. A great start and a great day!!
Unloading Trucks-Christmas In A Box For Soliders10/22/2008Christmas In A Box For Soldiers...These are pictures taken at Legion Post 256, Wichita, Kansas, during the unloading of two 5-ton trucks full of goodies and Christmas cheer for our Soldiers. Lots of stuff! Also pictured...a group of people on-hand to unload the trucks...we'll call them our "truck-unload-party". After about an hour and a half, both 5 ton trucks were empty...mission accomplished!! Who says work can't be fun!!
